Madeira

Levadas, subtropical forests, ocean and optional Azores islands — author tour with a NOMAP tour leader

Madeira is a Portuguese island in the Atlantic with a tropical climate, year-round greenery and a network of levadas — old irrigation channels with hiking trails running alongside them.

It's a place for hikers and nature lovers. Laurel forests, waterfalls, cliffs above the ocean, villages clinging to steep slopes.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

When to visit Madeira?

March-May and September-October — optimal (20-25°C, not hot, everything in bloom). Summer — hot and crowded. December — mild winter (19°C), lower prices, some rain. See Madeira in December.

How much is a Madeira tour?

NOMAP 7-day — from €1,200 to €1,800 per person. Includes van, lodging, route, tour leader. Flights and food separate.

Do I need a visa?

Schengen (Portugal is a member). Standard procedure at embassy or VFS.

Are the levadas difficult?

Easy to moderate levadas — for everyone. Pico do Areeiro → Pico Ruivo (3 peaks) — harder, requires fitness. We give a daily choice on tour.

What to pack?

Rain shell (especially for north), trail runners, light puffy for altitude, swimsuit. Detailed list in our guide.

Can you swim?

June to October — yes (20-23°C). Winter is colder (19°C), but Porto Moniz and Doca do Cavacas pools work.

Group size?

6-8 people. One minivan.

How is Madeira different from the Canaries?

Green island with 1,800 m mountains. The Canaries are volcanic desert. Madeira is for hiking and nature, the Canaries for beach.
