Levadas, subtropical forests, ocean and optional Azores islands — author tour with a NOMAP tour leader
Madeira is a Portuguese island in the Atlantic with a tropical climate, year-round greenery and a network of levadas — old irrigation channels with hiking trails running alongside them.
It's a place for hikers and nature lovers. Laurel forests, waterfalls, cliffs above the ocean, villages clinging to steep slopes.
Classic route: the best levadas of the island (Levada do Rei, Caldeirão Verde, 25 Fontes), Cabo Girão and Pico do Arieiro viewpoints, villages on the east and west coasts, tasting of local cuisine.
Madeira + extension to the Azores (São Miguel or Pico) — volcanic craters, hot springs, whale watching in the ocean.
March-May and September-October — optimal (20-25°C, not hot, everything in bloom). Summer — hot and crowded. December — mild winter (19°C), lower prices, some rain. See Madeira in December.
